Serving up ice cream and falafel in Detroit

Everyone knows biking and ice cream do together well. The newly opened Dairy World adds falafel and other Middle Eastern foods to that winning combination.

Dairy World is on Woodward just south of Seven Mile, but perhaps more famous for being next door to Dutch Girl Donuts.

It’s a family run business that seems to have a lot of funk, and lately has been gaining more and more customers. I know I’m doing my part by sampling their menu nearly every time I bike past. I can vouch for the grape slushies, vanilla malts, soft serve cones, and the falafel platter. They’re all good.

  • Run through the Mt. Olivet Cemetery

    Yum... Pancakes...

I recently signed up for a very interesting 4-mile run through Detroit’s scenic Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The race is this Sunday. There’s a 1.5 mile walk option as well.

The key selling point? Post-race pancakes!

I’m already thinking up some punny excuses, e.g. “I nearly died out there.”

You can register on-line. Also, the Free Press has an great article about the race.

  • Detroit City Fest

It sure seems like more and more folks are riding their bikes around Detroit. Last weekend’s City Fest certainly seemed to have more people getting their by bike. If you live even close to the New Center area, it’s probably faster to bike there due to the heavy car traffic and ease in parking your bicycle.

Below are a few photos from Sunday right around the time when George Clinton, Funkadelic, and Parliament took the stage. The crowd was awesome. The band was awesome.

  • Random Detroit Photos

I did a bike ride from Royal Oak to Belle Isle yesterday. On the way, I checked on the Russell Industrial Centers bike-in Motor City Moviehouse facilities, sneaked a peek at the Dequindre Cut, and took some interesting photos (below).

  • Detroit Alleycat Schedule

Yep, there’s an alleycat tonight at 8pm at Hart Plaza. It’s the rescheduled June 18th event.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it, as there are a couple more on the calendar and more planned.

    • Sunday,  July 6th at 2:00pm in Hart Plaza
    • Wednesday, July 30th at 8:00pm in Hart Plaza

They’re fun and free, so there are no excuses for staying home tonight.
